Personally, I like my connection being live as soon as I'm in Windows. But if you aren't always using the connection, then maybe you want it to authenticate on demand.

The cool thing about XP is you can install and try out the different PPPoE software, and if you don't like it, just go back to the previous setup using the System Restore feature.
