On win'98 I notice that my computer always waits for the cdrom to spin up to speed just before the desktop appears during bootup.

This spin-up is dramatically longer if I have a homemade cdr in the cdrom drive. For kicks, remove any media that you have in the cdrom and reboot.

BTW, my machine boots much faster when I have nothing in the cdrom drive.
