I didn't realise it until recently but not only
can you read temperatures, voltages and whatever
else from your motherboard but you can actually
control the fan speeds through the
onboard fan headers. It seems you can
reduce the power sent through the onboard fan
headers through software!

I'm posting this just in case anybody else
doesn't know about this little wonder!

I can't find anything about support for this for
other operating systems. This should definately
be put in the Linux kernel or some Linux
user-space program so the fan speed can be
lowered (and raised depending on temperature).

The only problem is the VIA 686 southbridge
isn't supported as VIA won't
respond
to this guy's requests for data. I
saw encouraging news at VIA Arena's forums
though that some people in VIA are looking into
it...
