not likely. The problem sounds like a hardware interaction problem on the PCI bus, which is why MS suggested changing that byte merge setting (if you had access to it).

You can try toying with TweakBIOS, though. The shareware version will let you play with the settings, but you cannot save them unless you register for the full version.
