First, go to the System Properties (Control Panel, or right-click on My Computer), select the Performance tag, and then click on the "File System" button. Make sure that Typical Role is set to "Network Server".

Second, if that doesn't improve things, you may wish to consider a dual boot machine -- Leave Windows 98 in place for the gaming, but use a Windows 2000 installation for running your productivity applications.
