And in the right slot? Most computers, and I'd guess laptops, too, have a specific order in which memory upgrades must go. Most go from either the first slot to the fourth, or from the fourth to the first. Oddly I've tried the memory in both the third and the first slot. Both work, and they seem the same to me. Weird.
