I don't see how he could fit Mandrake on anything less than 1GB without some major comprimise. The swap space alone would need to be around 400 megs with only 32 megs of ram. Unless he is planning on running console only. But don't really recommend that to a new user. If you are serious about learning linux I would definately pick up a cheap 4 gig or better spare HD and some more ram. Mandrake has a pretty low learning curb. And the install is very easy.
