Below, I posted about the modem prob I had when I setup dual boot 98se/XP on home computer.
I had NO IDEA what fun was!
It was about 4:30AM, 98 and XP were in and likin' it fine. All utilities, Norton's all updated, Windows Update all done.
I decided to put in CloneCD on 98 since it wouldn't run my burner (Sony CRX168b) on XP.
Install, launch --- WTF??? No CD ROMS?
Control Panel -- System. Lit up like a blasted christmas tree! I NEVER saw red X's b'fore! Yellow exclamation points everywhere! I'd lost my IDE channels, PCI bridges...... Damn near everthin'!!!!
I'd remove and refresh - no help. Reinstall drivers - it would go through the motions, but do nothing.
Power down, replug everything. No help.
Boot into XP, delete win98's C drive and copy back my copy of it. No help.
Reboot. That was the last I saw of XP!
"Unmountable drive" WTF!?!?!
BLAST! Fdisk.....won't work! locks up when I do anything. Same for other drive that held storage of files.
Booted from XP disk, it was able to use it's fdisk to remove the partitions. Seems I lost the partition since it was only seeing one instead of two.
Reinstall 98. Same thing happened!
Now, I'm looking real hard at the memory stick I put in. Crucial pc133 CAS2 128M same as other two.
Remove it, reinstall 98 again. Same thing happened. At least memory o.k.
Hey, I was being real anal when I installed the third time. If I looked hard at the screen I checked System. It happened when I installed the sound drivers. SBLiveWare. AND, that's what I was doing LAST TIME!!!!!
Ding ding ding!!!
At least I have the culprit. Corrupted drivers. Installed fine, even worked fine. Sounded good. Hosed the system, but sounded good.
Never noticed it first time 'cause all my updates and such were on HD, never used CD ROM after install 98se.
Well, all is well now. Those drivers are in electronic hell (except for my CDRs), 98se and XP are happy again.
Now, I gotta go do all those updates. Again.
