Not a dumb question at all. The drug store varity rubbing alcohol, (15 to 20% isopropanol in water), or the same concentrations or slightly higher of ethanol or methanol in water, will do the job. The idea here is to clean the lens of any dust and have your liquid cleaner evaporate quickly without leaving a residue. Reagent grade, (near 100% of the alcohols above), will also do the job but are harder to find and may damage nearby parts or plastic if your not careful.
