I have cofigured the router with an input from a Wilan radio (wireless connection to the internet) and an output to a 16 port switch (only using two of the ports on the router. I think the lead from the router to the switch is connected into an uplink port on the switch.

Note: The uplink port is so you do not have to use a crossover cable and can just use a regular straight cable from the router (regular port) and plug it into the switch (uplink). If I were to use a regular port on the switch I would need to use a crossover cable to hook it into the router.
If one arrangement doesn't work try switching from an uplink port to a regualr port. ( I sometimes have trouble remembering when or not a crossover cable is needed so If an uplink port is available I just see if it works plugged in a different way.)

You should not have to change any configurations if you are using DHCP for all computers to see the network, however....

I have noticed that when I am using more than 4 computers via the router that are connected to a server on the internet (Counterstrike) that it seems to contribute to increased pings.

Most switches are made to be stacked and you should not see any appreciable difference in preformance using 2 or 3 switches hooked toghether. I have heard going much more than this with non configurable switches starts causing problems, althought I have been to some 100+ people lan parties that were using 3com 24 porters that have worked flawlessly.

Just recently I have began just running the Wilan radio directly into the switch and hooking in the computers from there. This doesn't afford any firewall protection but the pings to remote servers seems to be improved. Of course I am connecting through a wireless network so some annomialies could be caused by this.

Another tip if you are connecting multiple computers to a remote server is to type "cl_rate 1000" (for Counterstrike) at the console. It will dramatically improve the ping time with multiple computers connected with one connection "if this makes any sense?"

aakk! being rushed excuse the typos...
