I've seen some articles on EE Times but don't remember too many specifics. But basically instead of backlit LCD it uses tiny LEDs.

Whether we're anywhere close to being able to create a flexible display of that nature, I don't know, I haven't read anything on it in a while. But I do remember something about a rudimentary polymer-based display that was printed onto a sheet of paper and then made to glow by applying an electrical current. Freaky stuff
