set your swap file to a set size, 2 - 2.5 times your RAM. (128M RAM = 250Mswap)
Set the min and max to same size.
This stops the swapfile from contributing to defragmenting.
Also, test your drives / partitions. Put swapfile on fastest one.

I have not played with this yet on XP. I think it is called the "pagefile" on XP, not sure.

You have Norton's or equivilent? One of it's optimizers (speeddisk I think) will move the swapfile around. (Gone on my XP install)
I used to set swapfile to 50M min / max, run Norton's and let it optimize it. Put it on fastest partition, at the beginning of the part, and set it to sensible max size. Then I'd set minimun to match. Worked fine on 98SE.
