I have similar setup.
Abit KT7 RAID (HP 370 controller)
2 X 30G WD HDs.
RAID0
Yes, anything on the disks is gone when you set up RAID0. No, if you set it up for mirroring and mirror the disk with data.
Install the drives, 1 each on each of the RAID IDE plugs. Both as master, jumpers the same..... blah blah blah.
Go into your HP BIOS. Create the RAID0 array. Set it as the bootable disk.
This may be your problem. It was mine.
Now, when you boot up, after the HP BIOS loads, your system acts as if it is a fast 40G HD.
FYI, if you were above 64G total, you would have unending problems with FDISK from Win98. It only understands up to that point, then it subtracts 64G from your total and reports that number.
Use the Fdisk on a WinMe disk. It is in the "Win9x" folder, I believe.
Unplug(IDE cable) and / or remove from the BIOS any "Zip" drive while installing. It causes a "No fixed disk present." error on both of my machines with fdisk, format and Norton's Ghost.
