and second from that, take it apart and clean it (assuming you have the mechanical ability to do so). My dad, at work, has saved several HP laser and inkjet printers from the trash by simply taking them apart and cleaning the crud out, wiping down the rollers with cleaning solution, etc.

The irony, of course, is that it is cheaper for the company to "discard and replace" than it is for them to hire someone to perform the semi-routine maintenance that would otherwise double the life of the equipment.
