If you have it set as a slave on a shared IDE. Try puting it as a master on it's own dedicated IDE cable. If that works, then you have picky cd-rom that prefers to be alone.
It's worth a shot. I have cd-roms that are the same way. I had to an PCI card that gave me 2 additional IDEs.
