One possible guess is that the Athlon XP has generated sufficient interest in the Athlon line that vendors don't want to be TOO undersold when people decide to go ahead with that Athlon upgrade, glance at the XP price, and then decide to save $10-20 by going with a Tbird instead.

That's kind of a random thought, but then, AMD did have a server crash the day of the XP launch, supposedly due to extremely high traffic...
