Start by setting up your system with ONLY the following:

-- Power supply
-- Motherboard
-- ONE stick of memory
-- AGP graphics card
-- Processor
-- Fan/heatsink

* Carefully apply the fan/heatsink by first using a small amount of thermal compound, spread evenly over the CPU core; then attach the heatsink.

* Unplug any and all other parts, there should be nothing attached to the mainboard or power supply (including cables) apart from those on the above list.

* Verify that your pin header for the power button is properly connected as stated in your motherboard manual. Some of those can be very confusing and easily mis-connected.

* Check all of your jumpers. Make sure the Clear CMOS jumper is in the "Normal Operation", NOT the "Clear", position. Make sure the keyboard power-on jumper, if present, is disabled (for now). Consult your motherboard manual if necessary.

* Make sure that the power supply 115/230 volt switch (small, recessed red or orange switch on the back of the unit) is displaying the proper setting.

Try to power the system. Does it spool up and stay on?

If yes -- see if the POST screen, etc. comes up. If it does you are in business. Shut down, connect each new peripheral (floppy, hard drive, etc.) ONE BY ONE and power the system each time. If it fails after a specific component, you have narrowed down your problem.

If no -- It is possible that you have a problem power supply or a faulty mainboard. Try connecting a different power supply to the system. If it then works, you have found your faulty component. If it doesn't:

(1) Disconect the mainboard from the power supply and all peripheral components (you can leave the processor and fan/heatsink attached, though). Pull the CMOS battery out and let the system stand for several hours. Then try again.

(2) If that does nothing, then contact the vendor that sold you your motherboard.
