I just replaced the 350mb harddrive in an acquaintance's Compaq deskpro 486/66 with an old WD Caviar 1.2gb, and I could still get into the setup.

But as soon as I pull the power plug, then plug it back in, it loses all of its settings. I told him it needed a new battery, but I couldn't see one anywhere (of course the entire mainboard is hiden by all their proprietary internal shit, so I figured it was just buried).
