No joke. Some of those Compaqs held just enough information to actually run in the BIOS itself, and all of the user-definable and non-essential settings were stored in a specialized non-DOS partition at the beginning of the hard drive.

For that reason, search through one of those machines and you won't find a CMOS battery anywhere.
