There's a couple ways to do this. The cable modem AT&T will give you will most probably have USB or ethernet connections. I'd go with the ethernet connection, otherwise the USB connection may start slowing your machine down (USB needs the processor to work). This means you'll need a NIC. There are some benefits to using a NIC. 1) no CPU heavy USB connection. 2) you can put a router between the cable modem and the NIC to act as a firewall. I have a Linksys broadband router and it works pretty well. I have not heard of some hacker breaking the security so it must be fairly secure. Just set it to reject all connection attempts and watch the packets hit the floor
