They didn't have shields. They "polarized the hull plates." I'm guessing this is a precursor to the shield "bubble" of future Treks.

For those of us who played Star Fleet Battles, I thought the ship looked like a stylized version of the new light cruiser which would be appropriate for the level of technology.

Yeah, the Enterprise couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with those weapons Although the grappler was kind of cool in a Quake sort of way.
