ESCD is the DUH, I wish I would remember what exactly it stands for. In short, it is the verification of the various checks for peripherals that the BIOS performs, such as memory, drives, PCI, ISA and so on. Don't take my word for granted, though, Bob might have some more accurate info.

All I really know is that last time I really hosed my BIOS on this machine here, it would hang at the ESCD because it couldn't see the IDE controller anymore, nor the floppy or anything else to that respect. Pretty painful experience without a backup BIOS chip.
