have you tried updating drivers? My favorite glitch was an onboard Yamaha sound chip on an Intel AL440LX motherboard. Windows 95 set up a driver for it, but playback was SLOW -- back to back with a normally functioning test machine, the AL440LX's sound was losing 2-3 seconds for every minute of playback. Installing an Intel-provided driver fixed it.

Dunno if your problem will be so simple to fix, but stranger things have happened.
