I also keep fish, tropical freshwater.

The best way to reduce the heat is to use/build a good reflector and raise the lighting.

If its a fitted (prefabricated) hood my suggestion would be to build a spacer of some sort.

I have 480W of mercury vapour over my main tank raised up by 45 cms, tip of bulb to water surface, which is the minimum distance for this kind of wattage.
