I myself have not had an AMD CPU DOA, 6 athlons (durons thru TBirds) & one 486. But my stepsons TBird 800 did break down in around 2 months but the replacement was killer as the ORB fan broke & stopped spinning. The CPU with a new very cheap H/S fan runs 20 degrees cooler now.
While broke (no CPU fan) the computer would not play games but still did windows without BSD & that same CPU does games now with no problems & still going strong.

You along with me & many others was taken by ORB's
bullshit even when you can manage to get to mount them right the CPU's still runs to hot. I have replaced all my ORB's with cheap H/S's & run much cooler now.

I bet your problem was mainly H/S related & your
CPU must have been a weak one.
