possibly you could, for your heat exchanger, use flexible PVC tubing instead of copper, which would allow you to thread it through the unit's evaporator coil with less risk of damage.

The heat transfer wouldn't occur as well as with copper tubing in direct contact, but the direct contact of the PVC to the metal woud surely be more efficient than using tubing-air-tubing as the transfer medium.

Disadvantage, the PVC would insulate the coil and need to be removed should you ever again have to use the unit as an emergency back-up.
