Microwaves themselves are typically defined as RF in the range of 300kHz to 300GHz, although a conventional microwave oven (i.e. where you usually see pacemaker warnings) will use radiation at 2.45GHz.

As a partial answer to your question, a computer's case provides some shielding, even in big-box systems with plastic cases a thin metal shield will be fastened to the inside of the case in order to meet FCC regulations.

DIY-ers with open cases or custom transparent cases offer no such shielding, though.

If anyone has actually done a study, I am unaware of it (and would like to read it if such a study does exist)
