It's not that it was a useless tool it's that the sales force was not geared to selling it. As well production would have eaten into existing product lines that were selling, which would have brought down numbers for the company as a whole. IF the lic structure that existed now exisited then, it would have been a much easier problem to handle.
Lastly, licensing ethernet for more than $1000 up front fee wouldwould have been the smartest thing.
