shouldn't matter really. A low level format won't do but if the drive was originally set up using MaxBlast, especially on an Intel system, you might be in trouble.
The key issue appears to be that Maxtor is one of the prime outfitters for Dell and some of the drives are configured almost exclusively for the Intel IDE controller. I had exactly the same situation where 2 out of 3 Maxtor drives were ID'd incorrectly by any VIA chipset (9.1 G coming up as either 4.3 or 13G) meaning that either one platter wasn't seen or else a non-existing platter was recorded).
I guess, you are having the same problem here, 2 out of 4 platters are not recognized by the BIOS but that is the drive, not the board.
Only workaround I know is to stick the drive into an Intel system, fdisk and format it and then stick it back to the other box.
