For what's its worth I'll tell anyone whos intersted...

I had a 10G D: partion my 15G GXP75 that was causing problems with scan disk and wouldnt format. Initially it was hanging when I was trying to backup files on another drive - making a seeking/grinding noise that would just keep going.

I tried to format it but it would hang at about 80% and the same noise would appear.

I fired up FDISK and divided the disk into 2 partions - 6 and 4G. The 6 sould format and the 4 would hang at about 20% and coloured squares were appearing on my DOS screen as the format tried to proceed. As a result - I sumised maybe the problem was at about 6.8G mark and if I could partion around it I might be able to rescue the rest of the disk.

I then repartitioned it to 6.5G, 0.6G 3.9G and forated those....strangely enough I could format all three. The problem had gone away and seems to have stayed away. Must have been the tickle that fixed the problem. So I proceeded to then repation the whole drive into;
2G=Win98
1G=SWAP
2G=Win2000Pro
4G=Programs
6G=Files

No probs so far.

anf on file
