you don't "ABSOLUTELY" have to get it.. but it nags you on the screen on every channel change.. but you can still have it record stuff.

But honestly.. get the svc.. it rocks. The ability to just tell it the name of the program and it grabs it whenever the time, even if it changes. And to have the program descriptions were nice for me since I don't have digital cable or Satellite.
