The HighPoint 370 chip adds 2 ATA100 channels that can support 2 devices each, and enables RAID0, 1, and 0+1.
RAID0 - striping - splitting data to go on 2 (usually) drives, so both drives will be reading and writing at the same time to increase speed
RAID1 - mirroring - duplicating the data from one drive onto another to protect against drive failure
RAID0+1 - striping and mirroring - stripes data across 2 drives, and copies the data to another set of 2 drives
The HighPoint chip also supports CDROM, DVD, CDRW and other drives.
I've used a Promise ATA66 RAID card and had a motherboard with onboard Promise ATA100 controller (no RAID) and I like the HighPoint better. The Promise chips only support hard drives and added much more time to the boot process.
Before you buy the 8K7A+, check out the Epox Motherboard Forum at amdmb.com. Some people are doing great with it, and some people (like me) are having trouble.
