as opposed to a standard aperature grill, a trinitron tube maintains its vertically-flat picture by using hundreds of tightly-strained, vertical wires.

However these wires could potentially vibrate like banjo strings, completely goofing the picture, so two damper wires run horizontally near the top and bottom as previously indicated.

However these two wires are not part of the standard picture apparatus and hence cut off two lines of the display. They are usually easier to see on a plain white backdrop.
