And a monitor power supply isn't something you could normally get your hands on ANYways.

Cheap 17" units brand new start around $179, you could probably locate a decent used one for about $90-100 if you did a little digging. And unless you have a friend in the business, btw, there is no such thing as cheap monitor repair.
