Traditional CD uses red laser light, which has a lower frequency. DVD uses blue laser light, which is of a higher frequency, and this allows DVD to store data at a much higher density.

DVD drives have been designed to be backwards-compatible with older CD formats, but a CD-ROM cannot read a DVD disc.

However, cheap 8x and 12x DVD drives are falling as low as $60-70 now.
