unless the system is hosed and you can't even boot, just start up windows and look at the "General" tag of the System Properties:

x = 'not present' is retail full version or CD upgrade (FAT16 only)

x = 'a' is OSR1 or full version/CD upgrade with the OSR1 update patch installed (FAT 16 only)

x = 'B' is OSR 2.1 with Internet Explorer 3 (FAT 16/32)
