It is also possible that you won't see a speed improvement -- when a modem dials into your ISP's server modem bank, the two devices negotiate the highest possible speed that can be maintained with a minimum of corruption. It is possible that your new modem is just a bit picker than your old one, and your old one may have not been performing any better due to accepting (and then having to drop) a slightly higher ratio of corrupted packets.
That is just speculation on my part, but I have heard that the AOpen PCI modems are good stuff so...
