my 4-cylinder 1988 Toyota Corolla GTS with a manual tranny gets 35-40mpg highway (w/o the air conditioning, more like 31-35 with it on), and it has a market value of only $3500, maybe $4000. My sister is driving a 1992 VW Jetta and getting about 35, and one of my friends just picked up a 1994 Civic in decent condition for $6 grand.

Sacrifice a new car for a decent used one, keep it for a couple years, and buy the dual Athlon with the difference
