as was pointed out earlier in this thread, since many cables aren't polarized there are four possible combinations of ways to plug in a floppy connector cable between the mobo and the drive, and three of them are wrong.

Well, actually eight and seven are wrong if you included getting the cable flipped around. The end with the twist in it should be connected to the drive, the other to the mobo.

Look at the silk-screening on the motherboard, either a white box will be drawn around the connector with a "slash" acros one corner, or there will simply be a "1" at one corner, or both. This indicates pin one and of course the connector should be oriented with the red wire on that side.

Having done that, try both positions on the floppy drive's connector -- although AFAIK, when you look at the floppy's reverse side with the unit oriented "up", pin 1 is usually on the left.
