there are so many aspects of hardware/software performance, I don't think any one program can be used a a total system benchmark.

Benchmarks are commonly divided between business and gaming.

Business:

Business Winstone
Content Creation Winstone
Sysmark

Gaming:
3DMark
Q3A
MDK2
UT
MBTR
yadda, yadda, yadda

Then there are proggies like ScienceMark (I think that's what it's called) and Flask MPEG4.

Each one has it's focus and blind spots. I.e., Winstone runs multiple apps at once, and Sysmarkd runs apps one at a time. 3DMark tends to run best on nVidia cards. IMO Quake 3 is obsolete as a benchmark. What's the difference between 150 and 200 fps?

I'd like to see more multimedia-based benches, like video capture, file encoding/decoding, etc., but maybe that's just me.
