my 7200RPM 20GB WD is deathly quiet and so far, problem free  But then, I got it from LED. Using a 5400RPM 4.3GB WD in this PII box, it is at least 2-3 years old and running fine.
My record so far with Maxtors is also remarkably dandy. A 1.5GB retail, used continuously for 18 months and then put in a box that was switched on/off 1-3 tims daily for another two years -- still going. 4.3GB purchased from baldy, who used it in his Super7 previously, no probs and temporarily humming in the K6-III+. 8.4GB retail, used continuously for two years in my Super7, temporarily in storage -- still good. 540MB, acquired over a year ago from a used-computer shop in exchange for the late President Jackson, died after 16 hours' use 
That one was kind of a bummer, but that same shopping trip also turned up the good-for-160MHz Am5x86-133, so I wasn't too put out
