The problem here could indeed be the software issue. This CNC coding software is 16bit. It did run well on my Celeron 400 system (even overclocked to 450). But I intermittantly get strange results and crashes with the AMD system.
The software company is finally coming out with a 32 bit version this summer so perhaps I'll hold off a bit. This is limited demand industrial software at fairly high cost ($3k to $5k) so they don't necessarilly put a lot of effort into keeping current with computer technology.
I've been reading up a bit over at Tom's Hardware and was coming to sort of the same conclusion stated in your responses re. the P3 and P4, although I was thinking maybe the P3 1 gig. Perhaps I'll follow your advice and just hold off.
