is this something you have actually traced to CPU execution error, or is the software SSE optimized and hence running slower on the Athlon, or...?

Just asking, because too often when people encounter problems on one setup and not on another, blaming some particular component is the knee-jerk reaction when in fact problems are often traceable elsewhere. Without knowing anything else I would express "doubt" that your 800MHz Athlon is the source of your troubles, short of a poorly-written software package. From reading posts over at the Ace's Hardware forum it appears many folks there are using Athlon processors -- and a lot of these are people who either write code or design chips for a living.

Anyway, unless you're dealing with heavily SSE-optimized software or have specifically traced your problems to the Athlon CPU, you'd be better off hanging onto your current setup or upgrading with another AMD platform. The PIII is a dead-end upgrade and the current P4s are power hungry, very slow in most typical applications, and very shortly, obsolete -- the next P4 generation uses a larger socket.
