BlackIce is an excellant firewall. I use it on both my win2k and ME machines.
If you want a free firewall the best one is Tiny Personal Firewall at www.tinysoftware.com.
It is a ICSA certified firewall, zonealarm is also free but not ICSA certified.
Port scanning is not harmfull, unless u have services running that can be exploited. Just make sure you have a good anti virus program running with your firewall
