If you have "active desktop" enabled, disable it then change your desktop color, then enable your background back to what ever you want.
FYI if an image is a .gif you have to use active desktop to use it as a background. If there is an image that I want to use that is a .gif I convert to a .bmp in paint shop pro, so I can turn active desktop off.
