take out the Awe completely, go to safe mode again, remove all IDE controllers as well as all drives and all IRQ steering entries. I am sure you got something sitting in there somewhere that blocks your new install but you won't be able to see it unless you are in safe mode. Don't forget to remove all CDROMs as well while you are there.
