it means the card can spend less time transferring data between system and graphics memory, which of course means you need a game that can take advantage of all that space (high-res textures, large textures, lots of textures, triple buffering at high resolutions...)

In the mean time, it makes for nice bragging rights -- "Yeah, my graphics card has as much memory as your computer..."
