take a look at your current modem, it probably has a MOV (medium brown, and about the diameter and thickness of two dimes) mounted somewhere close to the RJ45 jack pair. If it is split open and slightly discolored, you are guaranteed a dead modem, although it could easily be dead without showing that kind of damage.
