the crime is the deliberate taking of another human life.
Willfully cut someone else's life short, and you then fully deserve the same. Anything less is not an adequate deterrent to the crime.
Although if we were to convert our prisons to something more South American styled -- e.g. a hardened steel monkey cage, and if you eat it's because family and friends bring something to you -- I wonder how much crime in general would decrease?
