A quick fix is to get your settings from win98 and use it in linux to populate your settings. What I did to get my dhcp cable modem to work was to boot into windows. Click Start--> Run, type winipcfg into the box. write down your ip address, dns server, default Gateway, subnet mask etc..
Then boot into linux, type netconf, manually edit the files or use what ever network configuration tool comes with your linux distribution. Then just fill ip, dns server, gateway information and it should work for you.
